“Listening to Urban Communities in Change”: Airing the Laundry

Life in urban communities changes so fast! What can you remember about living here? Or working here? Or playing, or going to school, or clubs, or drop-in programs here? What should we hold onto? What should we remember together about this land and this city? What should we forget?

“Airing the Laundry” is the first of a series of art projects called LISTENING TO URBAN COMMUNITIES IN CHANGE that share stories of change in the McQuesten Neighborhood in Hamilton, Ontario through creative practice.

This first project remembers all the activities in and around the site of the St. Helen’s School, now the new site for the Biindigen Hub, 785 Britannia Avenue, Hamilton. The old school building is coming down in November 2023 to make way for a brilliant new health and community centre, led by Niwasa and their partners.

Starting October 2023, we will be gathering community memories of the old school site and surrounds, in person, and eventually in a digital form, so we can listen together to find new ways forward.

We hope to continue to build this project in the future, watch this space!
